French officials have consented to start stopping small boats in the Channel, following an extended period of pressure from the United Kingdom.

The change in policy follows the Prime Minister sent a letter to the President asking him to support the plan and saying there presently "lack any effective preventive measure" in the Channel.

French maritime police will be allowed to stop the migrant vessels at sea, but only before they've collected their passengers, according to authoritative statements.

French authorities have rarely intervened to stop the heavily loaded boats leaving the coastline because it is considered too great a risk to both officers and individuals.

"It is essential that we deploy these methods this month... We have no effective prevention in the Channel waters."

Currently, a French maritime police spokesperson states personnel will start intervening at sea, with the objective of safeguarding human life.

Significantly, the spokesperson ruled out the use of nets to intercept boats, which had earlier been reported as a possible technique to snarl the propellers of the boats.

This determination to take action at all is a major step forward, coming after a brief change towards a more aggressive strategy this warmer season, which dropped off when the previous Interior Minister left government.

That was highlighted in July, preceding a meeting between the UK leader and President, when authorities were observed walking into the sea to slash the hulls of a boat.

Currently French authorities will again be permitted to stop boats before they collect asylum-seeking passengers from the coastal areas of France's north coast, however it's not clear how the vessels will be prevented.

Powerful gusts are currently postponing the commencement of intervention operations and the people-smuggling networks will be looking for methods to adapt to avoid interception, as they have frequently done in the past.

The Home Office and Downing Street have been approached for comment.
